Why Continuity Is the Most Underrated Skill in Film Makeup

Directors obsess over performance. Cinematographers obsess over light. But the makeup artist who saves the edit is the one who obsessed over continuity.

01 — What Continuity Actually Means on Set

Film doesn't shoot in order. Scene 47 might be shot on day 2. The close-up of scene 12 might be shot three weeks after the wide. Your character's makeup needs to match — exactly — across all of it.

Continuity is the discipline of making that happen. It's not glamorous. It doesn't show up in the credits the way it should. But when it breaks down, everyone notices — in the edit, in the audience, in the reviews.

02 — What a Continuity System Looks Like

Here's what I maintain on every multi-day production:

  • Reference photos from every angle at the start of each look
  • Product notes — exact products, shades, and application techniques
  • Scene-by-scene continuity log tied to the shooting schedule
  • Quick-reference cards for each principal character
  • Daily check-in photos before camera rolls

03 — The Question to Ask Every Makeup Artist You Interview

“Walk me through your continuity documentation process.”

If they can't answer that question in detail — with specifics about how they document, what they track, and how they handle out-of-order shooting — they're not a film makeup artist. They're a makeup artist who has done some film work. Those are different things.

04 — Why It Matters More on Indie Productions

Big productions have script supervisors, continuity coordinators, and multiple department heads cross-checking each other. Indie productions often have one makeup artist covering everything. That artist needs to be their own continuity department.

After 20+ years across indie film, theater, and live entertainment — including years at Cedar Point managing continuity across 20+ productions simultaneously — this is where I live. It's not an add-on. It's the job.
